Grandma's First Watch


It’s grandma’s first watch
Ageless, timeless, primal
Listening for the snuffles of my grandson
Asleep in his crib


A snapshot moment
Snow falling outside the window
Sun reflected through the Christmas tree branches
Magical enchantment


The soft velvet mantle of the crone
A cloak passed from my mother to me
Slips easily over my shoulders
I have come of age
beneath the lullaby rocking and practical caring
of an easy everyday gran


Mama, grandma, gran tags
Newly sewn as cape labels
Comfortable in my new role
my hands move easily inside a familiar glove
My heart expands with love
